Beyond the chat interface: How to programmatically use Large Language Models in your research

Research Skills@vonRoll

Themenwoche+: (AI-)Tools for Research

Large language models, when used correctly and thoughtfully, can be a useful tool that researchers can use to automate, or semi-automate, different dimensions of their research practices. However, the best way to harness them for research is to use them programmatically; that is, by writing programs which call the models directly, rather than relying on user interfaces. This can also enable researchers to use a wider variety of models for a wider range of tasks, as well as having more control over different features of the workflow. In this workshop, I will provide participants with a gentle introduction to programmatically using LLMs, as well as example scripts for how to do this. We will also discuss and workshop solutions for participants’ specific research projects and questions.
