Open Science: Open Access & Open Research Data
Graduate School for Health Sciences (GHS) and Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) This 2h course introduces participants to the principal aspects of Open Science in general, and Open Access (OA) and Open Research Data (ORD) in particular. The course consists of three parts. In the first, we discuss the wider context and importance of Open Science as scholarly practice. The second part introduces participants to best practices in OA publishing and the importance of developing a publishing strategy. Participants learn about OA options and funder requirements. In a hands-on exercise, participants are introduced to an online tool to help find and select a suitable OA journal for their articles. In the third part, participants learn about: basic principles, ORD strategies and good scientific practices in Research Data Management, funder requirements, data governance, and research data guidelines. Participants will discuss in small groups how to find trustworthy and subject-specific data for (re)-use. In a discussion round, participants compare their daily research experience with the best practices and goals as put forth by UNESCO and the Swiss National Open Science (OA and ORD) Strategy.
